Dengue: the epidemic continues in despite a downward trend

Dengue: the epidemic continues in despite a downward trend
Descriptive text here

The Regional Health Agency (ARS) notes an overall decline in monitoring indicators for the dengue epidemic in Martinique. Vigilance remains required in the face of the persistence of viral circulation and the possibility of an imminent increase in precipitation. The ARS considers that it is imperative to immediately strengthen measures to combat the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, both on an individual and collective level.

Although an overall decrease in dengue surveillance indicators was observed last week (between April 15 and 21), vigilance remains essential. The threat of an increase in viral circulation with the arrival of the rains requires strengthening measures to combat the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, both individually and collectively.

Continuous monitoring shows that dengue fever maintains a high level with around 200 clinical cases estimated per week for the last four weeks (March 25 to April 21). The number of home visits for suspected dengue fever by SOS-Médecins has decreased, from 44 to 25 weekly visits. Since the start of the epidemic, around 18,480 patients have consulted for dengue syndrome in community medicine and 3,845 have been seen by SOS-Médecins.

Hospitals also saw a decline in dengue-related activity. Last week (between April 15 and 21), there were 7 visits to the emergency room, one of which led to hospitalization, compared to 9 the previous week with four hospitalizations. Among the cases in the emergency room, three concerned children under 15 years old.

In total, since the outbreak began on July 24, 2023, 1,611 cases have required emergency care, with 375 (23%) leading to hospitalizations.

These declining figures are not constant enough to cause the epidemic to stop. Vigilance is still in force, dengue is deadly.
