Inaugural on Monday, President Donald Trump made the fight against drug trafficking a priority. He wants to change the designation of the cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations”, the stated objective being to curb the activities of these groups, accused by the Republican of flooding “the United States with deadly drugs, violent criminals and gangs vicious”. The measure is one of the numerous decrees announced by Donald Trump on Monday, January 20, on the first day of his return to the White House. In 2023, more than 72,000 overdose deaths were caused by fentanyl in the country, which is the leading cause of death among 18-45 year olds in the country. Donald Trump also threatened to drastically increase customs duties on Chinese imports, in the face of Beijing's supposed passivity towards fentanyl trafficking.
Decisions of the new American president, which resonate with current events in France. Last Sunday, urban riots broke out in Mâcon, Burgundy, against a backdrop of drug trafficking. Three public buildings were “damaged”, three police vehicles “damaged”, seven light vehicles and an excavator set on fire, detailed the prefecture just after the events.
The Senate launched highly anticipated debates on the fight against drug trafficking on Wednesday, by adopting in committee a transpartisan bill which notably proposes the creation of a national anti-organized crime prosecutor's office. Furthermore, the Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals, Gérald Darmanin, announced today the creation of a high security prison reserved for the biggest drug traffickers, which will be inaugurated on July 31. The location was not specified.
