200,000 euros of expertise allowed us to learn more about the marl pits located under a road in the Eure. It is a departmental road, the RD675, between Bourg-Achard and Corneville-sur-Risle. The cavities were identified in the commune of Eturqueraye, the road was closed in September 2024, when the traces of subsidence were visible.
Under the closed section: the surveys carried out allowed us to find out more about the two cavities located under the roadway. This is a first marl located at 3 meters and the other at 35 meters deep.
These two marl pits, located on the Roumois plateau, are linked to old chalk extraction quarries. The cavities are made up of galleries 2 meters high. The Eure department signals that there are concrete risks “Under the road, the ground is weakened.”
During heavy rains, infiltration caused landslides and increased the risk of collapse, justifying the immediate closure of the road for the safety of users.

A section of road has therefore been closed since September 2024, with diversions for local residents and others for heavy goods vehicles. Around 6,000 vehicles are impacted by this closure, the mayor of the town recalls “that for local residents, it means extra kilometers to get home.”
The marnière falls in the departmental zone, there is no municipal sign there, so the project manager is the department!

The Eure department is financing this filling work: from January 2025, a special mixture of concrete and injection materials will be used to fill and stabilize the cavity. Work that integrates the proximity of sensitive networks (gas, hydrocarbons and telecommunications). This filling is estimated at 350,000 euros, it will be taken from the budget of the Eure mobility department.
There will be checks to verify the solidity of the subsoil, the road will then be completely redone before its reopening, planned if possible and depending on the weather conditions, in April. This year, 8 projects are being supported by the department.
