Aston Martin F1 is looking forward to the arrival of Adrian Newey early next year, admits team ambassador Pedro de la Rosa.
Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso admitted in Las Vegas that the Silverstone-based team was “almost now the last team in Formula 1 with Sauber”.
And he certainly doesn't expect to face Max Verstappen in 2025 either.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate Max and I hope I can be in this position soon, probably not in 2025, but with the change in regulations for 2026, I hope there will be a window of opportunity for more drivers and I hope Aston Martin will be one of them.”
“In the meantime, I hope that Adrian Newey can help us correct mistakes from 2025 otherwise it’s another year in hell that awaits us.”
Although the team's performance has completely collapsed since a strong start to the 2023 season, Lawrence Stroll continues to invest heavily in Aston Martin.
"That's what we're here for," confides the team ambassador, Pedro de la Rosa, former F1 driver, “to change the future a little bit, to get better with the 2025 car, to correct a lot of mistakes that were made in the design of this car.”
“We especially look forward to the addition of Enrico Cardile and Adrian Newey.”
Newey is recognized in F1 as almost a guarantee of success, but de la Rosa admits his influence will take some time and dampens Alonso's expectations for 2025 somewhat.
“It is true that Newey will not arrive before March. In March we are practically already in the first race of the season, but it is also true that in addition to these two great recruits we have a great team of engineers who now also have access to the best possible tools.”
“This is a state-of-the-art simulator and a new wind tunnel. We are no longer going to share or rent the Mercedes wind tunnel, we are going to have our own and I believe these are very important factors in providing our equips with the best possible tools.”
“We'll do wind tunnel testing in January, then Enrico Cardile will be there, then Adrian Newey. I think it will be three or four months before we start to reap the rewards, but it's a very long year.”
“This year we started off fighting with Mercedes, and now in Las Vegas, George Russell is on pole and winning. It's not how it starts, but how it ends.”
