In June 2025, Formula 1 fans will be able to enjoy themselves at the cinema with the release of the film simply titled “F1” and which will feature Brad Pitt. Feature film directed by Joseph Kosinski, who was notably behind the camera for Top Gun Maverick, this film relied heavily on the production of sequences shot during the Grands Prix. The single-seaters of the fictional APXGP team, which are in fact F2 cars dressed in F1 bodywork and which were produced with the help of Mercedes, were used when the competitions were paused on the circuits and even participated in some grid layouts. But while this film will be released in a few months, it turns out that a Formula 1 team had fears regarding this feature film. It is Red Bull and this revelation was made as part of an interview between the future ex-CEO of Liberty Media, Greg Maffei, and Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the film, during the 2024 Investor Day in New York. While Mercedes actively participated in the making of this film, opposing teams were afraid of appearing as the bad guys and this is particularly the case with Red Bull.
The fear of Red Bull
“What's interesting is that when we partnered with Mercedes, the other teams said 'wait a second, this movie is going to be about Mercedes and it's going to make us look bad'“, confided Bruckheimer, before continuing by confiding that this fear had finally dissipated for the Austrian team. “Red Bull said 'we're going to be the bad guys'. It took us three years to convince them that they weren't going to be the bad guys and we finally got to a point where all the teams were really supporting and helping us“, assured the producer of this Apple film, which should delight Formula 1 fans. All we have to do is wait until next June to immerse ourselves in the world of the paddock and see if Red Bull is considered the bad or not.
