Carlos Sainz has admitted he would inevitably be disappointed if Ferrari won a drivers' title immediately after his departure.
Lewis Hamilton's arrival at Ferrari in 2025 meant Sainz was forced to leave, and he has since signed with Williams F1.
It also means Hamilton could win an all-time record eighth F1 championship with Ferrari, aiming to end a streak without a drivers' title dating back to Kimi Raikkonen in 2007.
Sainz, who laid the foundations with Charles Leclerc for Ferrari to return to the path of Grand Prix victories, does not want to miss the opportunity to at least win the constructors' title this year.
“I am a driver who likes to be involved in development, living in Maranello to improve the team. When I arrived at Ferrari in 2021, my goal was to win a championship. We could do that this year in the constructors. “
“It would be even more painful if next year they were fighting for the drivers' title. I will feel that I have had some influence in building this team to be able to fight for the title, and not to be there next year, it hurts. So I want this title this year to be a little less disappointed in 2025.
“But we have to move on. I can't wait to be at Williams. It's just the way things have gone that there is this bitterness.”
Kimi Raikkonen, the last Scuderia champion, returned to Ferrari. Sainz would not be against doing the same thing.
“I'm a firm believer that you can never say never. In everything I've been through, I try to leave on good terms.”
“I try to put myself in good positions. I'm a guy who relates well to people, I'm relaxed in that sense. I'm going to leave that door open.”
“For the next few years, Ferrari is not an option for me, because I am committed to Williams. But in four, six, eight, ten years?”
