It’s the kind of reunion that stirs up nostalgic people a little. Josep Guardiola and Roberto Baggio, teammates at Brescia when the Catalan played there as a player between 2001 and 2002, were guests this Sunday on the Italian show Che Tempo Che Fa, hosted by Fabio Fazio. The ideal opportunity to remember delicious memories, but not only that. Guardiola still brought up the past when discussing the case of Leo Messi, of whom he was the coach at Barça between 2008 and 2012.
“You have to know himenthused the Manchester City coach. It’s easy for me to say he’s the greatest player of all time, but the stars aligned at that moment. The strongest? Maybe it’s a lack of respect for Pelé and Maradona, but for me, yes. I’ve never seen someone like that as a coach, you can’t imagine him maintaining this continuity for 15-20 years. When we see him up close, we think of Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan: we were lucky enough to be their contemporaries.”
But it was also a question of the future for the Catalan technician, while his contract with Manchester City, of which he has been the coach since 2016, ends next June. “My last year at City? It’s not safe… in the sense that I have to think“, he said, before returning to the rumors which announce him as the next England coach. “No, that’s not truehe assured. If I had decided something, I would say it. Anything can happen.”
