Formula 1 | Binotto would not have fielded a Hamilton duo

Mattia Binotto believes that his successor at Ferrari, Frédéric Vasseur, has “not revolutionized” the Scuderia’s way of working.

The current operational and technical director of Sauber/Audi F1 also said that he would not have signed Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, but the Italian is happy to see that his former team is doing well.

“I don’t think much has changed since I left. I prefer to say what I saw at Ferrari. Fred was able to continue the project in continuity. He did not revolutionize a structured and functional organization, even if of course he made his own choices.”

“If Ferrari wins, I’m happy because I know the team and the effort it took to bring it to a certain level.”

A key decision Vasseur made was to sign Lewis Hamilton but he doesn’t think it was the right decision.

“Non,” was the clear response from the Italian. “But he did the right thing to go to Ferrari, he made a good decision.”

“In my time, Ferrari had its sights set on other drivers. And if Leclerc is the star driver, then he is the one we should somehow guide towards its world title goal.”

In other words, Binotto was not a fan of a policy with two such strong number 1s, a policy that Ferrari finally adopted with Vasseur after many decades.
