Alonso admits Newey could delay F1 retirement

The arrival of Adrian Newey next season at Aston Martin could have an influence on the longevity of Fernando Alonso in F1, who would like to benefit from the work of the British engineer on the track.

For a few weeks, it has now been official, Adrian Newey will join Aston Martin in 2025 and will therefore be able to work with Fernando Alonso, to the Spaniard’s greatest pleasure.

Asked if Adrian Newey’s arrival at Aston Martin could change the length of his F1 career, Alonso admitted to having thought about it.

“I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about it,” he said during an interview on the official website of the Aston Martin F1 team.

“Adrian will arrive in March next year and focus on 2026, so let’s see how I feel at the end of 2026 and if I can continue: it will be a decision we make together as a team, with Lawrence [Stroll]with Adrian.”

Alonso to Newey: “I would love to work with you someday

Fernando Alonso also revealed a message sent to Adrian Newey confessing his desire to work with him before he signed with Aston Martin.

“I was hoping Adrian would join us when he decided to leave his old team,” Alonso explains. “To begin with, you dream that this could be a possibility.”

“There were a few rumors about him joining different teams and I asked Lawrence, Martin Whitmarsh, several people in the team if we had contacted Adrian.”

“I even ended up contacting him. I have his phone number and I sent him a message: ‘What a surprise! If you ever think you’d like a new challenge, I’d love to work with you someday.”

“I then found out that Adrian and Lawrence were in contact. Lawrence kept me informed of the negotiations. When Adrian decided to join us, I was very happy but also very proud – proud that he wanted to work with us and believed in our project.”

“It also shows what Lawrence can do – only Lawrence can do certain things. His passion for motorsport and his vision for Aston Martin are limitless.”

“I’ve never seen anything like it – someone so determined, so passionate. He is a source of inspiration for all members of the team. It’s a privilege to work with him.”

Alonso to stay at Aston Martin after retirement

Fernando Alonso has also indicated that he will still be part of the Aston Martin team even after his retirement from F1.

“Victory is closer with Adrian than without him, that’s for sure. He has an incredible track record in Formula 1,” added Fernando Alonso.

“I am aware of my situation and I hope I can be there to drive this fast car that Adrian is producing, but if it doesn’t arrive in time for me to drive, I will still enjoy it because I will always part of the team and this exciting adventure with Aston Martin.”
