30-year-old Colombian sprinter Fernando Gaviria has extended his contract with Spanish team Movistar for another season.
Arriving at the Movistar team at the start of 2023, Fernando Gaviria will spend at least three seasons there. The 30-year-old Colombian sprinter has in fact extended his contract with the Spanish team for the 2025 season. “It is an honor to be able to extend with the Movistar team. A team which, over the years, continues to improve its structure and wants to become stronger. This motivates all the riders on the team to give the best of themselves and to be able to have good seasons. With the extensions of Albert Torres and Davide Cimolai I am very happy because we will be able to continue with our group and continue to improve much more in the sprints and flat races“, reacted the runner who previously worked with Quick Step (2015-18) and UAE Emirates (2019-22).
Gaviria, like Movistar, on the decline
Fernando Gaviria hopes that his 2025 season will be better than the previous one, where he only raised his arms once. Winner of the first stage of the Tour of Colombia on his first day of racing, on February 6, he then won nothing! The Colombian took part in the Giro and the Tour de France this year, but was unable to perform well in the mass sprints.although he finished fourth in Rome during the final stage of the Giro and second in Turin during the third stage of the Tour de France. A season like the Movistar team, in sharp decline in the world hierarchy and which has only won eight victories in 2024, its worst total since it became Movistar in 2011 (except for the 2020 season, truncated by covid). Fernando Gaviria has also regressed in the hierarchy of sprinters, going from one season with 14 successes in 2017 to a maximum of three for four seasons. Will 2025 be the season of renewal? In any case, Movistar trusts him.
