“The winner is always suspected of being a cheater”, Pogacar’s response to Prudhomme’s statements

On the eve of aiming for a fourth consecutive success at the prestigious Tour of Lombardy, Tadej Pogacar spoke this Friday about Christian Prudhomme’s recent statements regarding doping. The director of the Tour de , questioned about the possibility of suspicion against the Slovenian cyclist, considered that the question was not “not illegitimate” with regard to the past of cycling. A statement that did not leave Pogacar indifferent. At a press conference and relayed by RMC Sport, Pogacar bluntly addressed the question of suspicions weighing on the performances of the champions, “Cycling is a sport in which people have, in the past, done everything they could to be the best they could be. They have risked their lives and we don’t know it, but there are a lot of riders who are today probably sick, who have mental or health problems because of what they did in the past to their bodies, 30 years ago”, he first explained, in reference to doping cases. “In my most honest and humble opinion, I think that cycling is a sport that suffers enormously from this era, there is no confidence. We hope that one day people will start believing in it again,” he detailed during his press conference.

In a sport which regularly experiences controversy over suspicion of doping, where every performance is questioned and called into question, Pogacar is now calling for “move forward”. “The winner is always suspected of being a cheater but maybe in a few generations people will forget the past. Guys like Armstrong did what they did. We have to move forward and from my personal experience I think cycling is one of the best sports. People want to be as healthy as possible, not the other way around just for performance.
