Olympic Games – Just a few strides away from a historic hat-trick. During the T63 100m final on Saturday evening, September 7, Italian para-athlete Ambra Sabatini fell, causing her compatriot Monica Contrafatto to fall. Without this incident at the Stade de France, the two Italians would have joined a third Italian on the podium, Martina Caironi, who won the gold medal.

At the Paralympic Games, Nantenin Keïta bursts into tears, devastated after her failure in the T13 400 meters

As you can see in the video belowAmbra Sabatini, in 5th position at the start of the race, quickly climbed back to first place. But 10 meters from the finish, the Italian collapsed unintentionally on Monica Contrafatto’s lane. The two athletes found themselves on the ground.

“Air was coming out of the valve of [m]a prosthesis »

“I’m still in shock, I don’t really understand what happened, I was almost at the finish line”lamented Ambre Sabatine, speaking to Rai Sport, who was competing in the T63 category for athletes with a single leg amputated above the knee who run with a prosthesis. And explained to the Italian sports television channel: “Before the start, I had a problem. Air was coming out of the valve [m]a prosthesis, and we repaired it with silicone.”

CShe, who holds the world record in the 100m T63, also wanted to apologize to her compatriot who she caused to fall, RMC emphasizes: “I’m very happy for Martina, but I’m sorry for Monica for hurting her.” After an appeal from the Italian delegation, Monica Contrafatto still got a bronze medal, with the British Ndidikama Okoh.

Even though Italy missed out on a hat-trick – gold, silver and bronze medals – the Boot is very well ranked in the general ranking of nations. It is in fact in 5th place thanks to the title obtained by Martina Caironi. Italian parathletes have won 24 gold medals, 5 more than France.
