Big scare this Thursday morning in a school in Chimay. A fire broke out in the establishment's boiler. Between now and the start of the school year, we will have to find a solution to heat the classes.
Classrooms and corridors are covered in moss. It was with this product that the firefighters managed to put out the fire. The fire started early in the morning in the cellar, where the boiler is located. The emergency services had to intervene cautiously.
“During our progress to see what was happening, we heard two explosions, which prevented us from progressing further. We turned around and chose the tactic of using foam which we injected through the vents around the facade of the building”, indicates Jerry Deliège, adjutant for the Hainaut-East relief zone (Chimay post)
The fire apparently started during work to bring the boiler into compliance. After cleaning, you will need to find a heating solution for the return to school.
“There are solutions for the start of the school year. We will contact companies that rent containers with boilers to be able to provide heating for the start of the school year. More fear than harm”, says Christine Close, the director of Saint Pierre and Paul primary and nursery school.
Today, the rapid intervention of the firefighters made it possible to avoid the worst. “The firefighters from the Chimay barracks arrived very quickly on site. They were then able to benefit from reinforcements from their colleagues from Couvain. I think a team from Charleroi was also dispatched. They were able to intervene quickly to limit it to the boiler room level”, specifies Tanguy Dardenne, the mayor of Chimay.
Currently, all windows in the school are open to vent odors and smoke. For the start of the school year, useful information will be given by the management to the parents of nursery and primary school pupils who are concerned.
