Temporary travel restrictions in the event of threats to public health will be authorized in the Schengen area. The Federal Council put this development of the Schengen acquis out for consultation on Wednesday.

The European Parliament and the Council of the EU adopted this amendment in mid-June. It takes into account lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic and aims to ensure coordinated approaches to public health threats within the Schengen area in the future.

The Council of the EU is now in a position to rapidly establish binding and uniform rules to apply temporary travel restrictions and other measures at the external borders of the Schengen area.

As a Schengen State, Switzerland participates in this harmonization and must therefore modify its national legislation.
