Covid-19: when former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson considered a “maritime raid” in the Netherlands to steal vaccines

the essential
In his new book, the former British Prime Minister reveals that during the global pandemic, he considered sending military boats to steal millions of vaccine doses stuck in a Dutch warehouse.

We knew Boris Johnson was ready for many things, but this information is beyond belief. Now a columnist for the tabloid Daily Mailthe former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom reveals in his new book Unleashed (Unleashed in French) a totally lunar anecdote: in March 2021 he would have considered “invading the Netherlands thanks to a spectacular raid across the Channel to recover the five million vaccines stolen by the clutches of Brussels”.

Indeed, Boris Johnson wanted to seize five million vaccines against Covid, which the European Union had threatened to prevent from being exported to Great Britain. According to him, Lieutenant General Doug Chalmers, then deputy chief of the British defense staff, had indicated to him that it would be possible to carry out a raid using small boats to cross the Channel and sail on Dutch canals. However, he had warned him of possible diplomatic repercussions.

A perilous plan

The plan, according to Boris Johnson, was to approach the warehouse, enter it, secure the vaccine doses, then exfiltrate on a truck towards the Channel ports. However, Doug Chalmers, now retired from the army, told him that it would be impossible to carry out this mission without being detected and that, in this case, “we would have to justify why we are invading a long-time ally of the ‘NATO.’

Ultimately, the sulphurous British leader never took action and most certainly avoided a serious diplomatic incident.
