While enjoying a stay in the heart of the peaceful ski resort of Lillehammer, Queen Sonja of Norway had to be urgently hospitalized on Saturday January 11 for irregular and rapid heart palpitations. Fortunately, his heart rate had quickly stabilized, thus avoiding any immediate danger. The situation, although serious, not being considered serious, the sovereign only spent one night in the hospital before returning to her home the next day, Sunday January 12.

On January 14, the Palace announced that the Queen, aged 87, was to have a pacemaker fitted. The operation took place without incident on January 16, and the sovereign is gradually recovering. In a statement released late this morning, the Palace said: “Her Majesty the Queen was fitted with a pacemaker today. The procedure was successful and the Queen is doing well.”

A queen in recovery

According to the same press release, Sonja from Norway will remain hospitalized for one or two days before returning home. The Rikshospitalet, where she was treated, is an establishment renowned for its expertise in cardiology. The royal family knows this hospital well, since King Harald V also underwent the installation of a pacemaker in February 2024. Like her husband, Queen Sonja will be able to count on attentive medical monitoring to recover serenely his royal activities. However, she will only resume her official commitments from next month, time to rest. According to the royal family’s schedule, she will not participate in any engagements until the end of January.
