The 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, held on January 5, 2025 at the Beverly Hilton, marked an electrifying start to the season, celebrating diversity and inclusion.
Hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, the ceremony celebrated an array of exceptional performances and groundbreaking projects in film and television. Glaser, known for her quick wit, kept the evening light and inclusive, ensuring the focus remained on the honorees.
The surreal musical “Emilia Perez” and the epic immigrant drama “The Brutalist” were the big winners at the Golden Globes on Sunday, as the prizes were largely shared among a crop of international films at the first major awards gala showbiz of the year.
“Emilia Perez,” a film shot in Mexico by French director Jacques Audiard, won four awards, including best comedy or best musical film, while “The Brutalist” was named best drama and also won the award for best actor for Adrien Brody, who plays a Hungarian Holocaust survivor.
“Emilia Perez,” which tells the story of a drug lord who transforms into a woman, entered the evening with the most nominations, 10.
Sunday was also a big night for “The Brutalist,” which shrugged off concerns about its sprawling runtime to land the best director award for Brady Corbet.é.
One of the biggest surprises of the evening was Brazilian Fernanda Torres who won the award for best actress in a drama film for “I’m Still Here”, which tells the story of a family torn apart by military dictatorship of the country in the 1970s.
Brody’s win was one of the most remarkable comebacks of his career, more than two decades after he became the youngest winner of the best actor Oscar for “The Pianist,” in which he also played a Holocaust survivor.
Another late-career triumph was Demi Moore, who won best actress in a comedy for the horror film “The Substance,” which takes a satirical and often grotesque look at the pressures placed on women by society as they age.
In accepting her award, Moore spoke of how decades ago a Hollywood producer told her she was “a popcorn actress.”
The ever-controversial Globes are in their second year of overhaul, following a 2021 Los Angeles Times revelation that showed the awards voting body had no Black members.
Comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the ceremony, kicking off the gala with a well-received, irreverent monologue.
Among the dramas, “Conclave,” a fictional account of high-stakes haggling in the Vatican, describing how the death of a pope sends the church’s different factions into a battle for its future, won best screenplay.
In comedy, Sebastian Stan won best actor for “A Different Man,” in which he plays a man who undergoes experimental treatment for a disfiguring facial disease, but regrets the consequences.
