On one side King Felipe VI, on the other Queen Letizia. A carousel of photographs was shared for each of the sovereigns, retracing their year 2024. A year with a particular flavor since Spain celebrated the first decade spent on the throne of its king, officially celebrated on June 19.
Work meetings, handshakes in the streets of Spain, state visits, lots of sport – including the Paris Games – the royal couple’s year was rich in smiles… but also in trials. Despite the boos, criticism and threats to their security, the sovereigns wanted to be as close as possible to their citizens, affected by the deadly floods. A presence on site which later earned them praise.
The king and queen were able to count on the presence of their daughters. Despite the distance – Leonor joined the Marín military school while her younger sister continued her studies at UWC Atlantic in Wales – the quartet enjoyed a few reunions under the photographers’ flashes. We will particularly remember the summer photoshoot organized for the twenty years of marriage of Felipe VI and Letizia or the ceremony of the ten years of reign of the sovereign.
Princesses Leonor and Sofia in the spotlight
2024 was also the year of highlighting the younger generation. Princess Sofia has honored a first official solo engagement, launching the Infante Sofia Photography Competition. Her official diary should gradually fill up in 2025, the year she comes of age, since she will have finished her studies across the Channel.
The heir to the throne, for her part, fully embraces her role as ambassador of the Spanish Crown. Driven by her natural ease, she made her first official trip abroad, at the invitation of the President of Portugal. In the first half of 2025, however, she will move away from media attention. Continuing her studies in the second branch of the Spanish armed forces, Princess Leonor is preparing to spend six months at sea to complete her training. Following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, she will board the Juan Sebastian de Elcanothe Navy training ship, on January 8. The date has been brought forward, the Ministry of Defense has just announced, according to Vanitatiswhich will force the princess to cut short her vacation with her family at Zarzuela.
