Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Tuesday honored journalists in conflict zones for their work under increased pressure and in dangerous conditions by announcing the winners of its annual press freedom awards.

The photographic prize was awarded to Belgian Gaël Turine who documented the effects of the opioid addiction epidemic in the United States, particularly in the city of Philadelphia (discover his photos on his Instagram account). His report “The ravages of tranq” was notably published in Le Figaro Magazine.

The prize in the “Impact” category went to Ukrainian journalist Natalja Humenjuk, who, through her organization The Reckoning Project, documented war crimes and focused on Russia’s responsibility for the deportation of Ukrainian children. This work led, among other things, to arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the “Courage” category, Al Jazeera bureau chief in Gaza, Wael al-Dachduh, was rewarded. Despite personal losses and immense danger, he continued to report on Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip. His wife, a grandchild and three of his children lost their lives in the conflict. Mr. Al-Dachduh was himself injured in the conflict.

Journalist Ravish Kumar received the prize in the “Independence” category for his commitment to free journalism despite political pressure in his country. His reporting on marginalized issues has made him a prominent voice in an increasingly authoritarian India.
