Kate Winslet speaks with emotion about the grossophobic comments she received in “Titanic”

Kate Winslet's iconic role in “Titanic” brought her worldwide fame, but also criticism over her weight.

Painful memories. Nearly three decades after playing Rose DeWitt Bukater in “Titanic,” Kate Winsleta said she was humiliated by criticism about her supposed overweight at the time, during an interview on the network's “60 Minutes” CBS.

“It’s absolutely appalling. “What kind of person must they be to do something like that to a young actress who is trying to find her place?” she said. In an excerpt shown during the interview, we see Kate Winslet on the red carpet at the 1998 Golden Globes, wearing a black and white lace dress alongside her co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio. A reporter then says Kate Winslet looked “slightly molded and compressed” in the dress, while a host suggests she should have opted for a dress “two sizes bigger.”

His appearance criticized throughout his career

These remarks are just one example of the many criticisms the actress received after the release of “Titanic.” Although she did not respond publicly to these humiliations at the time, the Hollywood icon revealed she met one of her detractors in person. “I let them do it. I told them, “I hope this haunts you.” It was a great moment. It was a big moment because it was not just for me, but for everyone who has suffered this kind of harassment. It was horrible, it was really terrible,” she said, moved to tears.

In addition, Kate Winslet also spoke about the condescending remarks about her appearance throughout her career, including for her last film, “Lee,” where she played Elizabeth “Lee” Miller, a model turned war correspondent for Vogue during World War II. “People say, 'Oh, you were so brave for that role. You didn't wear any makeup. You had wrinkles,' but do we say to men, 'Oh, you were so brave for that role? role. Did you grow a beard?” No. We don't do it. It’s not courage, it’s acting,” she explained, adding it was “exhausting” to constantly have to worry about judgments being made about her body.

Earlier this year, the actress told the British edition of Harper's Bazaar in August that a member of the film crew asked her to sit down to hide her “bulges” during a scene.
