While the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice made him a filmmaker again bankabledirector Tim Burton recently returned to his relationship with Johnny Depp, and made a promise to his fans.
Tim Burton reassures Johnny Depp fans
In 1989, Tim Burton was exhausted from filming Beetlejuice et Batman which he made for Warner Bros. He wants to focus on a project that is close to his heart, a gothic Christmas film, which pays homage to both the film Frankenstein by James Whale and his favorite actor, the great Vincent Price. Inspired by his own youth in the residential suburbs of Burbank, he wrote Edward Scissorhands (1990) alongside American screenwriter Caroline Thompson. For his casting, he called on Winona Ryder, whom he directed in Beetlejuiceand to a promising young actor, to whom he offered the leading role: Johnny Depp.
Often considered Tim Burton's best film alongside Batman: The Challenge (1992) et Sleepy Hollow (1999), Edward Scissorhands marks the beginning of one of the greatest collaborations in contemporary American cinema. Indeed, if Tim Burton has had several female muses (his different companions in the city), the shy director has only one real male muse, Johnny Depp. Together, they will shoot eight films: Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), The Funeral Wedding (2005), Sweeney Todd (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010) et Dark Shadows (2012).
Is it because their last two films were caricatures of Burtonian cinema, or is it because of the legal escapades of Johnny Depp, accused of domestic violence by his ex-wife Amber Heard, the fact remains that the two artists have ceased their collaboration after Dark Shadows in 2012. Tim Burton's cinema did not find itself reinvigorated… While theactor won his case against Amber Heardthe director of Sleepy Hollow regained artistic health with Beetlejuice Beetlejuicewarmly received by the press and the public, who were nevertheless ready to spit in unison on the film. Could the two friends collaborate together again?
It is this question, asked by the media IndieWire during Tim Burton's appearance at the Marrakech Film Festival, which the American director had to respond to. And the least we can say is that his answer will make fans of the duo jump for joy. “I'm sure there will be others [films avec Johnny Depp]”. On the absence of the actor in his latest feature films, he explains that he chooses the actors based on whether they correspond to the project in question. We recall that Tim Burton gave his support to Johnny Depp when the latter was fired by Disney and Warner from licensing Pirates of the Caribbean et Fantastic Beasts.
