PEOPLE – A meeting that no one wanted to attend. Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horran and Louis Tomlinson attended the funeral of their One Direction partner Liam Payne together on Wednesday, November 20. The private ceremony is being held this afternoon in the south of England, a month after the singer's sudden death on October 16.

Liam Payne died at the age of 31 after falling from his hotel room balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His family and friends, including the four former members of boy band One Direction, gathered to pay their respects at St. Mary's Church in Amersham, northwest London.

Kate Cassidy, Liam Payne's girlfriend at the time of his death, was also in attendance. Cheryl Cole, with whom the singer had a child, Bear, now seven years old, is said to have entered from the back of the church to avoid being photographed. Simon Cowell, who formed the boy band One Direction on the show X Factor in 2010, was also seen.

Liam Payne's coffin arrived in a white carriage pulled by two horses, as seen in the video at the top of the article. The words « fils » et ” father ” were inscribed on the roof with blue and red flowers. The parents of the deceased followed the procession in a black car. The pallbearers then brought him inside the church for the ceremony.

One Direction devastated

Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horran and Louis Tomlinson arrived separately, all dressed in black and wearing sunglasses. The day after Liam Payne's death, the ex-members of One Direction said “completely devastated” in a joint statement, adding “In due time, and when everyone is able to do so, we will have more to say. But for now, we will take the time to mourn and digest the loss of our brother, whom we loved very much.” The four singers then each shared a message in tribute to Liam Payne.

His death shocked his fans around the world. Many tributes took place, including one in London on October 20 which brought together thousands of people, singing One Direction songs in chorus.

Argentine prosecutors have revealed that Liam Payne had consumed alcohol, cocaine and antidepressants before his death. Three people were charged with supplying him with drugs. He died as a result of “multiple traumas” and a “internal and external bleeding”.
