A big name in French gastronomy has passed away. As reported The Public Good, chef Jacques Le Divellec, pioneer of culinary shows and head of a particularly well-known fish restaurant in Paris in the 1980s, died at the age of 91, Friday June 14. His restaurant made the headlines because it was in front of its storefront that the photo revealing the existence of Mazarine, the hidden daughter of François Mitterand, was taken.

A lover of the sea, Jacques Le Divellec spent his childhood by the water, in Charente-Maritime, a land to which he has always remained deeply linked. He also completed his military service in the navy. In 1958, he moved to La Rochelle and saw his restaurant, “Le yachtman”, obtain its first Michelin star in 1962, then a second in 1978.

His fame grew and was exported to Paris, where he opened a new restaurant, the “Jacques Le Divellec”, in 1983. With its blue facade like the sea, this restaurant specializing in fish quickly attracted crowds on the Esplanade des Invalides and particularly political figures. He had gone so far as to be nicknamed the “Bocuse of the sea” by certain peers. Its address was taken over in 2016 by the young chef Mathieu Pacaud and was simply renamed “Divellec”.
