The Palais de Tokyo summons ghosts in its new series of exhibitions

Good news for lovers of modern : it is finally possible to discover the autumn season of the Palais de Tokyo. As usual, the splendid building reinvents itself around a theme in the era of the times, and this year offers around ten exhibitions linked to… the ghosts ! Here are the ones that particularly caught our attention.

Maryse Condé in the spotlight

While the visit is just beginning, it’s impossible not to to pace in front The Figures by Malala Andrialavidrazana. Located in the exceptional large glass roof of the Palais de Tokyo, the scale of the fresco is impressive – 60 meters wide, 5 meters high. This monumental work presents itself as geographical maps, on which representations from stamps, banknotes, prints and advertisements selected by the Malagasy artist. We move away, then come closer, we observe it length and breadth and across, we try to grasp every detail: by its visual and technical grandeurce digital photomontage already promises a surprising season.

After strolling between the bronze sculptures of Barbara Chase-Ruboudan American artist rarely celebrated in , we grasp the universality of Maryse Condé’s work through Tituba, who to protect us?. This exposition collective gathers the gaze of eleven Western artists (Grapes Of Folco Jemni, Claire Zaniolo…) to diasporic trajectories to explore mourning, memory, migration and ancestrality. The different sculptures, films, photographs or paintings on display interact directly or indirectly with the work Me, Tituba witch…written by the Guadeloupean author in 1986, whose main character, Titubarepresents a protective figure who fights loneliness with his invisibles.

An immersive experience in the heart of a volcano

The suite is enjoyed on the ground floor. As we go down the stairs, we have a thought for Théo Clercdesigner in the spotlight in the wall work facing them; at the end of the pencil, Julien Calemard et Thami Nabilhis friends, wanted to pay tribute to him to denounce his abusive detention in Azerbaijan. In September, the artist was sentenced to three years in prison for graffiti, after painting a subway.

After the engaged drawing, we immerse ourselves in the abstract art of Myriam Mihindouwhich presents Presencea broad exhibition of his work over the last twenty years. Nearby, we spot a hidden room, a sort of black box where removing your shoes is obligatory: would the season be immersive in addition to being figurative ? Obviously, and it is Julian Charrière who ensures this with Stone Speakers. Inside, we enter a volcanic landscape composed of mineral sculptures. We feel the bowels of the planetmoving, vibrant, from the floor to the walls thanks to the volcano records made in Colombia, Italy and Iceland. The experience is worth living: it ends in style a fascinating stroll, never simply technical, always interpretive, in a magnificent Art Deco setting.
