Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle were “chased” on Tuesday evening in New York by “very aggressive paparazzi”, an incident which could have been “catastrophic”, according to a spokesperson for the couple on Wednesday. But if the New York Police Department confirmed officers helped the couple’s security team; authorities claim thatthere was never a ‘pursuit’: ‘The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have arrived at their destination and there have been no reports of collisions, summonses, injuries or arrests.’
Speaking at a press conference, Mayor Eric Adams questioned the length of the chase described in the statement. “I would find it hard to believe there was a two-hour high-speed chase”he said, adding that even a 10-minute chase would be “extremely dangerous in New York.”
The taxi driver who picked up the coupe and Meghan’s mother is also much less alarmist about what really happened: “We were blocked by a garbage truck and suddenly paparazzi came and started taking pictures. Claims that this was a lawsuit that could have ended in tragedy are exaggerated because the paparazzi weren’t aggressive.”
For its part, the very serious New York Times wrote this morning: “This story, of a chaotic and dangerous chase through Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday evening, made headlines around the world, making headlines on both sides of the world. A member of the couple’s security team said the episode “could have been fatal” to the couple, but as more details emerged including testimony from police and a taxi briefly involved, the picture got complicated.”
