A few weeks after announcing that he chose Caen () rather than to build its future museum, the collector Jean-Claude Gandurfounding president of the Gandur Foundation for Art, looks back with emotion on the creation of the future place of culture and art which should see the light of day by 2030.

Thursday October 10, 2024, the Swiss billionaire posted a video on the Linkedin network to explain himself what would be this exceptional place which will see the light of day in Caen.

“An inclusive museum, which is aimed at everyone” in Caen

“This museum, I would like it to be inclusive“, specifies Jean-Claude Gandur, recalling his desire that this future museum “ is for everyonefor children as well as adolescents, adults and seniors, to all those who want to discover something new and a new format » […]

We will see if I have won my bet to make this place of culture and art a place where you will want to come, to discover collections on which I have worked for many years trying to cover as much as possible. possible all the civilizations that the earth has supported, whether the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia.

And this “so that those who come to watch can take inspiration from this model“, supports the art lover, confiding that since he was a child he dreamed that, perhaps, one day, he could create a place “where we could all come together, discover different cultures, discover different arts.

This is the mission that I have set for myself, and I am delighted to share it with you,” concludes Jean-Claude Gandur.

The Gandur Museum will be built between the Memorial and Bird Hill, on land ceded for 1 € symbolisme by the city and for which the Swiss art collector would be ready to invest €30 million.

A collector for 50 years

Aged 75, the Swiss billionaire made his fortune in oil. For 50 years, he has been collecting thousands of works and objects in archeology and decorative arts, but also in contemporary and African art, etc., including 850 major paintings of post-war European painting.

In 2010, Jean-Claude Gandur created a foundation that he originally wanted to set up in Switzerland in a wing of the new art and history museum in Geneva, but a popular vote opposed it.

Therefore, seven French cities were candidates, including Caen. This dates back to 2022. The long process resulted in a selection of two cities, Bordeaux and Caen, who won last May.
