American hip-hop star Sean Combsaka P. Diddy, was arrested on Monday, September 16 in New York, the rapper’s lawyer confirmed to CNN, confirming information revealed a few minutes earlier by TMZ and NBC. According to initial reports by American media, Sean Combs has been indicted by a grand jury.
The New York Times reports that the indictment has not yet been made public, but the rapper is expected to be charged with racketeering and sex trafficking.
Multiple complaints of rape
In a statement to TMZ, Diddy’s attorney said the rapper “voluntarily relocated” to New York last week “in anticipation of these charges.”
The lawyer described his client as “a music icon, self-made entrepreneur, loving family man and philanthropist who has spent the last 30 years building an empire, doting on his children and working for the betterment of the black community.”
Although he has made his name in music history by winning three Grammy Awards in 1998 and 2004, Sean Combs has been known for several months for being at the heart of several legal cases.
He was in fact caught up in several accusations of rape, sexual exploitation and physical and psychological violence.
A civil complaint was filed in New York in November 2023 by his ex-partner, R&B singer Cassie, who accused him of a rape in 2018 and of “violent” and “deviant” behavior over a decade, such as forced sex with male prostitutes. The case was ultimately settled “amicably” under a confidential agreement.
Since then, two other women have filed complaints, including one, with her face uncovered, accusing him of having “drugged and sexually assaulted” her in 1992. In December, the rapper was also targeted by a civil complaint in New York accusing him of gang rape of a 17-year-old minor in 2003.
Extensive searches were conducted at residences owned by Sean Combs in March in Los Angeles. In May 2024, CNN aired a montage of surveillance footage from a Los Angeles hotel from March 2016 showing the rapper going on a violent rampage against his then-girlfriend. The rapper apologized for his “disgusting” behavior.
