The government wants to increase the tax on plane tickets to meet ecological and budgetary imperatives. A measure which has sparked strong criticism, particularly from the airline sector, worried about the economic and social repercussions.
Air France-KLM takes action against the tax on plane tickets
The idea of increasing the solidarity tax on plane tickets (TSBA) is divisive. Initially proposed in Michel Barnier's 2025 draft budget, this measure was taken up by the government of François Bayrou, notably defended by the Minister of Public Accounts, Amélie de Montchalin. She believes that this increase is a “ fiscal and ecological justice measure », emphasizing that wealthy travelers are the main users of air transport.
However, for Benjamin Smith, CEO of Air France-KLM, this decision is “ irresponsible ». In an interview with Parisianhe recalled that France is already one of the European countries where air transport is most heavily taxed. According to him, the new tax could cost his company 130 million euros per year, thus compromising its financial balance. “ This would mean fewer lines, less growth and therefore fewer hires », he warned.
An impact on the airline sector
Beyond the consequences for his own company, Benjamin Smith warned of the effects of such a measure on the entire French aviation sector and the national economy. « For 20 years, we have been losing 1 to 2% of market share per year to foreign companies. “, he explained, referring to the risk of seeing air traffic diverted to other countries. He describes this taxation as real “ access tax to France ».
The aviation sector federations also reacted, asking the government for in-depth consultation and reflection on a more targeted use of the revenues generated, in particular to finance the decarbonization of the sector. This demand is based on the urgency of reconciling environmental imperatives and economic competitiveness.
-The planned increase in the tax on airline tickets raises the question of the balance between social justice, climate objectives and economic sustainability. If the government continues in this direction, adjustments may be necessary to avoid further weakening of the French air sector.
