After a similar decision in Paris, it is Bordeaux's turn. The heaviest non-professional vehicles, in particular certain SUVs, will have to pay a rate 30% higher than that in force to park in Bordeaux from May 2, the town hall announced on Friday January 17.
“A new price will be introduced for the heaviest cars. (…) This increase concerns subscriptions and the hourly rate. On the other hand, the subscription of professionals is exempt”we can read in a press release.
The town hall, led by ecologist Pierre Hurmic, explains this choice by “a stronger ecological impact” of these vehicles which “generate more pollution and increase CO₂ emissions”but also “roads deteriorate more quickly” because of their weight or “a greater occupation of public space (…) by their bulky volume [qui] reduces parking capacity ».

In Paris, visitors who own an SUV must since 1is October 2024 pay an amount three times what they previously paid to park on the streets of the capital. However, this measure does not concern residents.
