If the traditional departmental competition king cakes awards a prize for the original pancake, the creativity of Sarthe bakers is also at play in the beans. Several inventive initiatives are springing up during this period when the pancake is king.
The sporting world in the spotlight in the cakes
The L bakery‘Atelier de l’Ozannerue Courthardy, brings a bit of the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the epiphany. Beans bearing the image of the legendary car race are hidden in the cakes available commercially.
At La Ferté-Bernard, the Benoit bakers pay homage to rugby and basketball and more specifically, to the Ferté clubs which practice these sports: VSF basketball and VSF rugby.
Precious stones in their frangipane setting
In the pancakes of Djamal Lebkia, baker in Saint-Symphorien and Rouez, there are beans but also precious stones.
A sapphire, a ruby and an emerald (value of 200 euros each) were inserted into three pancakes with frangipane as a setting.
Zoo animals on the beans from this Spay bakery
In Spay, the bakery Ozan House took part in the games of local beans for its pancakes. Jonathan and Laura Ozan honor the residents of the Spaycific’Zoo in their cakes.
Beans drawn by schoolchildren
The initiative was relayed by our colleagues from Free Maine. The bakery Toasts & Treats in Malicorne-sur-Sarthe sells pancakes with beans inside whose design has been made by students of two primary schools in the town.
The student’s drawing and first name appear on the bean.
Sarthois heritage represented on beans
Just crowned with the departmental prize for the best frangipane pancake, the bakery At the sweet mill de Solesmes offers pancakes highlighting the heritage of the Sabolian country. Shortbread castle, Solesmes abbey… are for example represented in this collection of 9 original beans.
Heritage is popular among Sarthe bakers. Manuel Landeau, manager of Fournil de Ségriealso gives pride of place to the monuments of its sector: castles of Sillé-le-Guillaume and Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, town hall of Beaumont-sur-Sarthe… are immortalized on these beans. In Sargé, the Hubert Tollet bakery has taken the same direction.
In a more retro style, it is possible to find beans at the epitome of local heritage at the bakery Sweet Earslocated in Parigné-l’Evêque. The beans represent the heritage of the commune but are in fact reproductions of postcards old ones dating from the first half of the 20th century.
