(Agence Ecofin) – In Morocco, chicken meat is among the most consumed foods. Faced with growing demand, the poultry industry is exploring new options on the international market to guarantee a stable supply.

In Morocco, the National Association of Poultry Meat Producers (APV) wishes to add the USA and the United Kingdom to its list of suppliers on the international market. This was revealed by Mustapha Mountassir, president of the APV, who spoke to the local daily Media 24, Wednesday, January 8.

This is one of the proposals made by the association to the government to diversify the sources of supply of broiler breeders to the country which currently depends on massive imports from Spain and .

The initiative also takes place in a context where poultry prices are rising sharply due to the increase in the cost of inputs and unfavorable climatic conditions which lead to greater mortality of chicks. According to the APV, tensions on the domestic poultry market are also amplified by the rise in poultry prices. red meat, which encourages consumers to turn massively to chicken.

« The price of a chick increased from 4.5 dirhams ($0.44) to nearly 13 dirhams ($1.3). It’s huge. This is also a first in Morocco. The price of the chick has never reached these levels“, said Mr. Mountassir. If for Morocco, the increase in purchases of breeding chickens aims to regulate the internal market, it should nevertheless contribute to increasing the import bill which amounted to nearly $24 million in 2023, according to the data compiled on Trade Map.

The APV also hinted at a collaboration project with the American Aviagen, specialized in poultry genetics, to invest in poultry farming in Morocco with a view to improving local production.
