Oil exploitation in Senegal: Sangomar exceeds its annual objectives with record production of 16.9 million barrels

XALIMANEWS-Annual crude oil production from the Sangomar field, located in western Senegal, reached around 16.9 million barrels in 2024, or 5.2 million barrels more than the initially set target, according to a statement made Tuesday by the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum and Mines.

”In 2024, annual production amounted to approximately 16.9 million barrels of crude oil, thus exceeding the initial target of 11.7 million barrels,” the ministry said on its Facebook page.

Among this production, approximately 16.4 million barrels were sold on the international market by Senegal, representing almost all of the oil extracted in Sangomar, according to details provided by the ministry.

The ministry recalls that oil production on the Sangomar site officially began on June 2, 2024. Twelve wells located around a hundred kilometers south of Dakar are currently “active”, allowing the oil field to produce 2.96 million barrels last December.

During the month of December, three cargoes representing a total volume of 2.94 million barrels were sold on the international market, adds the same source.

Senegal thus marked an important step by entering into oil production last June, almost ten years after the announcement of the discovery of deposits in the Sangomar field.

The exploitation of this oil field is ensured by the Australian company Woodside Energy.
