2025 is synonymous with new rules regarding noise pollution emitted by cars. The requirements in this area were updated on January 1, as the TCS recalled this Tuesday in a press release. The Federal Council has, in fact, decided to add avoidable exhaust noise to the list of nuisances to avoid. However, this is not a revolution for the Jura cantonal police who are responsible for applying the standards in force.
With these new provisions, the Federal Council intends to better penalize excessive vehicle noise. The move follows the adoption of a motion by Parliament. Concretely, it is now explicitly prohibited to produce exhaust noise, in particular detonations, if this can be avoided, as explained by the TCS. The amounts of certain fines are also adapted, in particular when a motorist leaves his engine running unnecessarily with a fine which increases from 60 to 80 francs.
An unchanged strategy for the police
These new rules do not fundamentally change the strategy of the Jura cantonal police in this area, but they provide a slightly longer arm of leverage, according to Thierry Erard, the head of the traffic group. The police will therefore continue their spot checks carried out in collaboration with experts from the Vehicle Office.
Tests with anti-noise radars have also been carried out in Geneva. However, various obstacles still need to be examined before concrete legal bases can be developed and implemented in Switzerland, according to the Federal Council. /alr
