A mandatory technical inspection for two-wheelers

Since April 15, 2024, a new decree requires owners of motorcycles and other two-wheelers to carry out a technical inspection of their vehicle. So, if you still have not completed this operation, you risk a fine.

Who is affected and when should this check be carried out?

The measure concerns vehicles registered before January 1, 2017. The first technical inspection must be carried out no later than four months after the anniversary date of entry into circulation. For example, for a vehicle registered in 2015 and put into circulation on June 20, 2015, the check had to be carried out no later than October 20, 2024. To facilitate this process, a deadline was set for everyone: December 31, 2024.

What are the penalties for non-compliance?

The absence of technical inspection is considered an offense. Violators face a fine of up to 750 euros in the event of an inspection. In general, the fixed fine amounts to 135 euros. A decision to immobilize the vehicle can also be taken by the police.

What about the next deadlines?

After this first wave concerning the oldest vehicles, it will be the turn of the more recent models. So :

  • if your vehicle was registered between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019, its first inspection must be carried out in 2025;
  • if it was registered between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021, its first inspection must be carried out in 2026;
  • if your vehicle was registered after January 1, 2022, its first inspection must be carried out within four and a half to five years following its entry into circulation.

The technical inspection is valid for three years. According to the observations ofdirects.frprices vary from 49 euros to 88 euros.
