Angola launches production of large natural gas deposit

(Ecofin Agency) – With approximately 55 billion cubic meters of proven natural gas reserves in 2023, Angola seeks to maximize the potential of its resources to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on oil, in accordance with its Master Plan for the Gas (NGMP).

In Angola, the Cabinda Gulf Oil Company, an Angolan subsidiary of Chevron, has just launched production on the Sanha Lean Gas Connection (SLGC) gas project, located in the province of Benguela, on offshore block 0. Production from the site is planned to power the Soyo power plants (750 MW) as well as the Angola LNG natural gas liquefaction plant with a capacity of 5.2 million tonnes per year.

In its first phase, the project will supply 80 million standard cubic feet per day to Angola LNG. A second phase will add 220 million standard cubic feet per day through the commissioning of an additional compression module. At full capacity, the site will supply a volume of approximately 600 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. This production will help in particular to cope with an anticipated gas supply deficit in Angola over the period 2022 to 2025.

According to Statista data, natural gas production in Angola averaged around 9.29 billion standard cubic feet per day between 2019 and 2023, compared to a demand of 20.89 billion standard cubic feet. per day.

At the same time, the government is also accelerating the establishment of its Gas Master Plan (NGMP), an essential roadmap for the development and monetization of the country’s gas resources. This provides in particular for particular attention to gas projects, to satisfy growing local demand and reduce dependence on oil, in a logic of energy transition efforts.
