The Italian carabinieri announced on Tuesday that they had dismantled a jihadist propaganda cell made up of five young foreigners and led by a Pakistani woman, four of whom still reside on the territory of the peninsula.
Four of them are accused of having “constituted a terrorist association of Salafist inspiration” with the objective of “the promotion, consolidation and strengthening of terrorist groups called Al-Qaeda and Islamic State” (IS), specifies a press release.
The fifth is accused of “training for possible enlistment in jihadist terrorist organizations,” according to the press release.
The Bologna (north-center) prosecutor's office in charge of the investigation issued five arrest warrants, four of which were executed, the fifth accused having left Italy to go to the Horn of Africa, according to the same source.
The investigation began in September 2023 thanks to the control of the internet and jihadist propaganda sites “which have become a formidable instrument for bringing together and retaining loyalty, especially second-generation young people with a migratory past or young Italians in search of an identity clear and who more than all others are subject to the fascination of global jihadist rhetoric,” according to the press release.
The investigation made it possible to “witness a rapid and therefore worrying evolution of the intentions of those suspected not to limit their commitment to the sole propaganda of jihadist content but to broaden their fields of action towards new subjects”, concludes the press release.
