The company “AMEA Power”, a subsidiary of “Al Nowais Investments” of the United Arab Emirates, plans to diversify its activities in Morocco by launching for the first time projects in the areas of seawater desalination and production of green hydrogen. These new initiatives will be in addition to its existing and under-development projects in the renewable energy sector, said its president, Hussain Al Nowais, in an interview with the site Asharq.
Currently, AMEA Power operates four clean energy projects in Morocco with a total capacity exceeding 200 megawatts. In addition, the company is present in around 20 countries in Africa and Central Asia, where it has a global electricity production capacity of around 6,000 megawatts.
A flagship project in desalination and green hydrogen
AMEA Power's next major project in Morocco will consist of investing in seawater desalination, with a budget of at least $100 million. This project will be carried out in partnership with the Spanish company Cox, specializing in energy and water solutions, in which the Emirati company recently acquired a stake during the latter's IPO in Spain.
Furthermore, AMEA Power aims to engage in a green hydrogen production project in the south of Morocco, with a capacity estimated at 1 gigawatt.
A local anchor to support Moroccan ambitions
AMEA Power's growing interest in the Moroccan market was reflected in the opening, last year, of an office in Rabat which exploits investment prospects and holds discussions with private companies wishing to supply clean energy.
“We have identified promising sites for future investments in towns like El Hajeb and Taroudant”indicated the same source, welcoming Morocco's proactive policies in promoting investments in renewable energies, seawater desalination and green hydrogen.
