At the start of the week, we brought you the news concerning the feat achieved by Ford with its Mustang GTD at the Nürburgring circuit, in Germany. The car completed a lap under the legendary seven-minute mark on the famous track.
Today, Ford released a video showing driver Dirk Müller accomplishing the feat behind the wheel of the Mustang GTD. It's definitely worth a look, firstly to hear the car, but also to remember how technically complex this circuit is, and that it requires constant concentration. Let’s say it’s not iconic for nothing.
Interviewed by Car and Driver magazine, Dirk Müller said that despite the difficult weather conditions that day, he and the team were able to complete three laps of the track. He broke the seven-minute mark in the first, which took a ton of pressure off him.
His first lap was the fastest of the three, and the team knows they can do better. Indeed, the track conditions were not ideal, particularly due to extreme heat.
Greg Goodall, the chief engineer of the GTD program, has been with Ford for 22 years and has worked on every Mustang since the introduction of the fourth generation (1994). Over the past two years, he and the rest of the team have worked tirelessly to transform the Mustang GT3 race car into a super road car. He told Car and Driver that the main goal, from day one, was to get the GTD to lap the Nürburgring in less than seven minutes.
But we want to do better. “I'm not going to speculate on how long we might do, because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what I say. What matters is the time we achieve on the track,” he said in substance.
