A cruise between Los Angeles (California) and Ensenada (Mexico) turned into a disaster in recent days. An hour after departure, a drunk passenger began to behave uncontrollably: the 35-year-old kicked a crew member in the face and then punched a colleague of it. Michael Virgil then appeared threatening towards other passengers: “The gentleman who was drunk said he was going to kill us. He started chasing us in the hallway,” Christifer Mikhail told Fox 11.
Chased by the 35-year-old man, a member of the crew ended up locking himself in a cupboard. Christifer Mikhail then took out his phone and began filming Michael Virgil as he tried to kick down the door with his foot while yelling profanities, before taking off his t-shirt and launching into a racist tirade. “I was a little scared. I was stuck in this hallway. He could have thrown me ten meters just with a flick, because the guy he hit sort of flew (…) backwards,” the witness said.
The 30-year-old was finally subdued by several security agents, who used handcuffs and incapacitating spray. Michael Virgil was detained in a cabin, where he died an hour later. The causes of the passenger’s death are still unknown, but his family claims that the staff injected him with a tranquilizer. “He didn’t deserve to die for that,” a relative told Fox 11. According to the entourage of the thirty-year-old, who was traveling with his fiancée and his seven-year-old son suffering from autism, the behavior he exhibited was not at all like him.
The FBI is investigating the circumstances of the altercation and the passenger’s death. “We are saddened by the death of one of our customers. We have offered our support to the family and we are working with the authorities as part of their investigation, indicated for its part the Royal Caribbean company.
