(Ecofin Agency) – After the commissioning of Tunisia’s first floating solar power plant on Lake Tunis in June 2022, Qair Group continues to support the country’s energy transition with 2 new projects.

The renewable energy company Qair Group announced that it had started the construction of two solar power plants of 10 MWp each in the governorate of Kasserine in Tunisia. The cumulative annual production capacity is estimated at 44 GWh, enough to power 30,000 Tunisian homes according to the company.

The power plants will reduce the country’s electricity bill by saving 8,000 tonnes of natural gas per year, and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by avoiding 17,000 tonnes of CO emissions.2 per year. It was in April 2024 that Qair Group announced that it had secured financing for the construction and operation of these two units, thanks to the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The company then specified that it would fully own the first, while the 2e would be a joint venture between it and Mazarine Energy. In any case, these plants mark an important step in Tunisia’s energy transition, which aims for 35% renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2030.
