“Coding” of acts, administrative hell for doctors

-

BIG STORY – Fall, suture and even crocodile bite… Everything has a code in health. While the hospital is desperately short of doctors, they spend part of their time listing their actions, in a grid that has more than 16,000. A level of precision that borders on the absurd.

This is a dive into the world of Ubu, a new illustration of the French bureaucratic hell. In the hospital, when a patient presents himself to the emergency room, after a fall for example, the doctor must “code” the act performed. And it is a question of being precise: code W1300 if the fall occurred while playing sports, code W1301 if it was while participating in a game or leisure activities, W1302 if it was while performing work for profit but W1303 if it was during other forms of work, W1304 for a fall occurring while resting, sleeping or eating… And the code varies again depending on whether the fall occurred in an industrial building, a farm or on a road. The example is far from anecdotal: each year 2 million falls by people aged over 65 are responsible for 10,000 deaths and more than 130,000 hospitalizations.
