In the United Kingdom, Stellantis is preparing to redeploy its production to its Ellesmere Port site, 300 km away in the north of England, which produces small light utility vehicles such as the Citroën ë-Berlingo, the Opel Combo Electric or the Peugeot E-Partner. Result, it is the other factory located in Luton, north of London, which is expected to pay the price with hundreds of job losses as a result. On Tuesday, November 26, the car manufacturer announced its intention to close this Luton factory. It must be said that in the United Kingdom, the electric vehicle sector is particularly suffering, notably due to a lack of sufficient support from the authorities for electric vehicles. Manufacturers who, moreover, are worried about the promise of the Labor Party, elected last July, tobring forward by five years the ban on the sale of new cars running only on petrol and diesel within the European Union, or in 2030.
Promised support from Stellantis
Let us remember that more than 1,100 people currently work full-time in the Stellantis factory in Luton. In addition to relocating certain positions from Luton to Ellesmere Port, Stellantis said it would bring “comprehensive employment support, including reskilling opportunities, for all affected employees [dans] the very active area of Luton”. In the meantime, Stellantis has launched a consultation with British unions.
