The trendy social network Bluesky would not respect European law. The European Commission is opening an investigation into the matter.

Here are perhaps the first clouds for the blue-sky social network. Bluesky, the Twitter competitor which now has more than 22 million users, has been on the rise since the presidential election in the United States and a real exodus from Twitter by major accounts.

This Monday, November 25, the European Commission announced that it considers that Bluesky is in breach of European regulations when it comes to online platforms by refusing the publication of precise data.

What is Bluesky accused of?

According to the Commission, European regulations require all platforms to offer a page with the number of users present in the European Union. This page is not offered by Bluesky.

All EU platforms, even the smallest ones that are below the threshold, which is the case with Bluesky, must have a dedicated page on their website that indicates the number of users they have in the EU and where they are legally established. This is not the case with Bluesky to date.

The Commission has therefore asked the governments of the 27 Member States to find out if there is a Bluesky subsidiary in the EU to warn it of the matter. Bluesky Social was still a young company, it is unlikely that such a subsidiary exists today.

For the moment, Bluesky does not fear much. The platform is still too small to be covered by DMA or DSA regulations.

Bluesky's popularity continues to grow

In a few weeks, the social network Bluesky seems to have succeeded in establishing itself as the alternative to Twitter, rather than Meta's Threads. The platform promises its users better control over the algorithm and moderation tools.
