This is good news to start the summer off right: more than 10 million taxpayers will receive a tax transfer in the coming weeks. A welcome payment, which will allow beneficiaries to receive additional income to finance their vacation.

This payment is not linked to any aid but to a tax refund. Indeed, the tax authorities currently owe money to millions of taxpayers who have paid too much tax in recent months. An overpayment linked to withholding tax: until now, the rate levied on taxpayers’ income was in fact calculated based on 2022 income declared in spring 2023. However, for a large number of taxpayers, the amount levied in 2024 is greater than the amount of tax actually owed this year.

Following the income tax return recently submitted in spring 2024, the tax authorities were able to calculate the amount of this final tax based on 2023 income. This calculation includes not only the new income declared this year, but also any tax credits or deductions not taken into account in the withholding tax rate levied until now on 2024 income. In other words, taxpayers whose income fell between 2022 and 2023 and/or those who benefit from tax credits or reductions for expenses incurred last year (home employment, donations to associations, etc.) have a good chance of receiving a tax refund.

To find out whether or not they are concerned, the taxpayer must connect to their particular space on the tax site and consult their latest notice of their income tax filing situation. This document is available on the home page and downloadable online in PDF format. If the first page of the document contains the words “amount reimbursed to you” followed by the amount to be paid, then the taxpayer will benefit from the tax payment this summer.

The tax administration has communicated the dates of the refunds, which concern between 10 and 15 million taxpayers. Most of them will be made by bank transfer, with payments occurring either on July 24 or July 31. They will be made to the bank account known to the tax administration for income tax. If the tax services do not have the bank details of the beneficiary taxpayer, the tax refund will be made by a check letter sent to the last address known by the tax administration. These checks will then be sent between July 24 and August 23.

In principle, taxpayers do not have to take any steps to benefit from the transfer from the tax administration. Unless the bank details or address available to the tax authorities are no longer up to date. In this case, future beneficiaries must quickly have this information modified via their particular space on the tax website.
