Airtel Africa plans to invest $750 million

Faced with competition from MTN, Vodacom and Maroc Telecom, which is raging in 14 countries where it is present on the continent, the operator with 152.70 million customers is sending a message to its rivals. It will invest 750 million dollars in modernizing its network and services

Airtel Africa Group plans to invest $750 million in its network during the 2024/2025 financial year. In its annual report, the African subsidiary of the Indian group Bharti Airtel explains that the announced forecasts include additional investments in data centers and fiber optic activities.

In 2023/2024, Airtel Africa invested $737 million, of which 87% was spent on growth initiatives to improve network capacity, increase coverage and ensure connectivity through IT and cybersecurity solutions. The company also invested $152 million in license renewals and spectrum acquisition costs.

This investment effort is part of Airtel Africa’s strategy to better position itself to capture more growth in the African market. “An under-penetrated telecoms market, a young population and increasingly affordable smartphones, as well as low data penetration offer us growth opportunities in voice services and data services,” underlines the group in its Annual Report. Moreover, “The low penetration of traditional banking services gives us the opportunity to address the needs of unbanked customers through our dedicated mobile money platform, Airtel Money», continues the group.

Airtel Africa operates in 14 markets across the continent with a total population of 636.10 million. The company has 152.70 million customers, of which 64.40 million are for data (internet) services and 38 million for Airtel Money. Its African operations generated revenues of $4.90 billion in FY2023.
