Vietnam offers huge opportunities for semiconductor industry

Vietnam offers a great opportunity to develop semiconductor and AI industries as it has an abundant and well-trained workforce, Richard Lawton Thurston, a leading non-engineer semiconductor expert in the US, said when meeting with Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung in Washington on June 26.

The Dr. Thurston, who is also a former senior vice president of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Ltd. (TSMC), pointed out that AI technology requires various components such as sensors, memory, data collection and processing. Therefore, Vietnam can choose one of these components to develop it and build its own strategy.

Minister Nguyen Chi Dung said that after establishing their comprehensive strategic partnership, Vietnam and the United States have actively promoted cooperation in all fields, including science, technology and innovation.

The US side agreed to support Vietnam in training and improving the capabilities of the semiconductor industry, as well as participating in the global value chain, the minister said, adding that these are also the areas where Vietnam focuses on developing high-quality human resources to meet future demands and improve long-term research and development capabilities.

He called on Thurston to share his experience and practical ideas, as well as recommendations to boost the development of Vietnam’s semiconductor industry and help Vietnamese companies connect with TSMC.

TSMC will support Vietnam in developing plans and roadmaps for the semiconductor industry, Thurston said.

In Washington, Minister Nguyen Chi Dung met with Kathryn Neal, Director of International Policy at Microsoft Corporation, stressing the Vietnamese government’s willingness to promote and support Microsoft’s activities in Vietnam.

He proposed to Microsoft to send a high-level delegation to Vietnam soon to conduct studies, surveys and engage in discussions with Vietnam on the establishment of research and development centers.

Before arriving in Washington, Minister Nguyen Chi Dung had a working session with representatives of Super Micro Computer Corporation, a global manufacturer of server components.

The Vietnamese official suggested the company collaborate with the Vietnamese government and businesses to develop data centers, cloud, AI and 5G infrastructure in Vietnam, saying Vietnam currently has strong demand in these areas.
