The city is launching an in-depth technical study to acquire 114 new buses and optimize its network, thus meeting the mobility needs of residents and neighboring communities. This project aims to improve the quality of service, reduce congestion and position Fez as a model of urban mobility in Morocco.

The city of Fez recently announced the launch of an in-depth technical study aimed at renewing and optimizing its urban public transport network. This initiative, which includes a process of acquiring new buses, marks a long-awaited step by the municipality to improve mobility within the city and neighboring communities.

This project, which follows a critical report by the Court of Auditors on the current management of public transport in Fez, is part of a total investment of 436.3 million dirhams, half of which will be financed by the municipality. The objective is to acquire 114 new buses that will remain the property of the city, even after the expiration of the current delegated management contract in 2027.

Reshaping the future of transportation
This project will allow the municipality to define the characteristics of future buses, tailor-made for the winding streets and wide avenues of the city. The commissioned experts delve into a multitude of parameters, from the optimal weight of vehicles to their capacity, including state-of-the-art drive systems.

“The objective is to design a fleet that combines comfort, efficiency and respect for the environment,” explain the town officials.

This study is not only limited to technical specifications, it also encompasses a holistic vision of urban transport, integrating the current and future needs of Fez and its neighboring municipalities. The challenges are to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and offer a reliable service to students, workers and tourists. Especially since the city is already preparing for major upcoming sporting events, such as the CAN 2025, by anticipating visitor flows. Through this approach, the municipality wishes to make Fez a model of urban mobility for all of Morocco.

A strategic investment for enhanced autonomy
This investment strategy is not only financial, it is above all a bet on the future. By building its own fleet, Fez is giving itself the means to control the quality of the service, to quickly adapt its offer to the changing needs of the population, and to guarantee continuity of service beyond contracts with private operators. “This is a clear message sent to citizens to emphasize that mobility is now a priority for the city,” explain the members of the municipality.

Every step counts
The launch of this study is only the beginning of a long and meticulous process. Indeed, the city has set up a rigorous monitoring system, involving regular visits to the bus production sites, strict quality controls, and constant monitoring of compliance with deadlines. Through this hands-on approach, the municipality aims to ensure that each dirham invested will result in a tangible improvement in service.
