Purchases over 50 euros are now possible

In 2022, according to figures from the Banque de France, 60% of bank card payments were made contactless.

It’s a gesture that has now become part of everyday life. Contactless payment at merchants has almost become the norm. But so far, only purchases of less than 50 euros allow you to use your card without having to insert it into the payment terminal.

Thanks to a new function called “Contactless Plus” which is currently being deployed, purchases over 50 euros will also be authorized contactless. However, you will need to enter your secret code to validate the operation.

For contactless payments up to 50 euros, the customer journey remains unchanged without entering the confidential code.

To benefit from it, the customer does not have to do anything, almost all bank cards benefit from the functionality and the update is done through the payment terminals used by merchants.

Used by 86% of French people

“Sans Contact Plus makes it possible to generalize contactless payment whatever the amount. Payment is therefore faster, with an accelerated checkout and as secure as ever,” welcomes the bank card group.

In 2022, according to figures from the Banque de France, 60% of bank card payments were made contactless (+6 points in one year) for an average amount of 16 euros.

According to another study, 86% of French people used this means of payment in 2022, an annual increase of 7 points.

“The health crisis has changed behavior, the speed of use and the practicality of contactless payment seems to be unanimously accepted by the French. The increase in the ceiling from 30 to 50 euros by the French Banking Federation in May 2020, has undoubtedly further strengthened the adoption of this payment method”, we can read.

Contactless payment was launched in 2012, for amounts less than 20 euros, the payment ceiling was raised for the first time in 2017 to 30 euros then to 50 euros.
