A shouting match described as a “massive explosion” by witnesses broke out in front of several guests gathered last Wednesday evening at Mar-a-Lago, according to the news site Axios. It pitted Elon Musk, who does not seem to have left Donald Trump one step since his election, and Boris Epshteyn, one of the president-elect’s long-time advisors. During the argument, the billionaire entrepreneur notably criticized Epshteyn for orchestrating media leaks concerning the appointments that the advisor suggested to Trump.

According to Axios, Musk has questioned Epshteyn’s influence, particularly regarding the selection of Matt Gaetz as U.S. attorney general and the appointments of two of Trump’s lawyers in the Stormy Daniels case, Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, as Deputy Attorney General and Associate Deputy Attorney General. Axios does not explain how these appointments trouble Musk. It is not impossible that he does not view favorably the appointment of a man accused of having slept with minors at the head of the Ministry of Justice, for example.

Epshteyn finds that Musk takes up too much space in Trump’s entourage. However, according to Axios, the president-elect continues to appreciate Musk’s company, which is leading an open campaign these days in favor of the nomination of Howard Lutnick, CEO of the financial services company Cantor Fitzgerald and co-chairman of the team of Trump’s transition to the post of Treasury Secretary. Musk disparaged another candidate for the position, hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, on X.
