The spearhead of the economy in Europe could reorient its trade policy. Even before his election as the 47th President of the United States on November 5, Donald Trump had put forward, in the middle of the electoral campaign, the idea of a 10% tax on products imported into his country via the European Union. .
“EU countries don't take our cars. They don't take our agricultural products. They sell millions and millions of cars in the United States. No, no, no, they will have to pay a high price,” said the Republican candidate, whose comments were relayed by Euronews.
Which countries in the Old Continent would be most massively impacted by this potential new trade tax? Here is a summary, based on data from the government agency Eurostat, of the 10 European countries which export the most to Uncle Sam's country.
Poland
With a total of 11.003 billion euros of goods exported to the United States in 2023, Poland occupies tenth place in this ranking, or 12% of its annual exports.
It was thus ahead of Denmark (9.918 billion euros) and Finland (8.429 billion euros).
Austria
Austria exported a total of 14.758 billion euros to Uncle Sam's country last year, or a total of 23% of its total exports over the year.
Sweden
Last year, Sweden sold 16.306 billion euros worth of goods to the United States, which represented 20% of its total exports.
Spain
Slightly above in this ranking, Spain exported 18.904 billion euros to the United States last year, or 13% of the volume of all its exports in 2023.
Belgium
Compared to Spain, Belgium achieved almost double the exports of its products to the United States with a total of 31.324 billion euros of goods sold. This figure represented 18% of its total exports in 2023.
The Netherlands
The Netherlands also exported a large quantity of goods to the United States last year with a total estimated at 40.547 billion euros, or 16% of its annual exports.
France
In the same vein, France made a total of 43.892 billion euros in exports to the United States last year, or a share of 16% of its total exports made during the year.
Ireland
On the podium of this ranking, Ireland totaled 51.621 billion euros of products exported to American soil in 2023, or almost half of the total volume of its annual exports (46%).
Italy
Italy has also largely favored the route leading to the United States for its exports in 2023 with a total of 67.266 billion euros of goods sold on American soil last year. This represented a 22% share of all its exports in 2023.
Germany
Well at the top of this ranking with more than double the number of exports made to the United States compared to Italy, Germany exported 157.7 billion euros of goods to its American partner last year, i.e. 22% of its total exports per year.
